This section shows the features and the differences between the different model-year: in the other area of the site technical matters and further investigated, including any SP version.
The pictures serve as proof of the information provided and
as integration of the text. Please note that outside Italy some bike was sold up to 1998 with the new body shape, but the "old" frame and the Rotax 123 engine. These bikes are GS type, so please
check the dedicated areas of the site.
First off
all a note regarding the differences between the first extrema equipped with Rotax 123 and the next with the Rotax 122:
-
the
pivot in the first series is positioned differently and the different feeling of riding is appreciable only by few experienced riders;
however, it would be interesting to measure if the displacement of the RS rotax-122-powered is due to the different shape and positioning of the engine (actually I have no proof of a
different effect of the chain force)
-
in practice on the road you notice a different behavior of the engine, which has more torque at middle rpm and appears to be slightly more powerful of the Rotax 122 that, on other side, has a
bahaviour more "flat".
In
1995 aprilia starts to sell a new motorcycle, which keeps only some detail fof previous "GS" series. Here
below a summarization of the new features compared to the previous
extrema:
-
Rotax 122 instead of 123 (except that of many bikes
"export")
- ignition with variable timing instead the simple "two-step", but that can not do without the battery as in the Rotax 123
-
new aluminium frame, polished as the 1994 one
- pivot lowered by 3 mm
- no shape for the crankcase oil refill because in Rotax 122 it change position
- no protuberances near the steering column
- different front support of the engine
- new body (excepted the rider seat and the black matt side panels)
- new headlight and tail light
- new front disc flange
- the silencer has the same shape and structure of the 1994 one (aluminium and carbon fiber cover), but instead of a plate it has an embossed approval number
-
electronic instrumentation with tachometer and multi-function display control (clock, water temperature, battery voltage, and chronometer)
The
hydraulic brake system, rear disc, rear frame, the carburetor, the fork, the swingarm, the driver and passenger pegs are identical to the previoul model. The tank cover is interchangeable with the previous
series.
The colors are two, both Replica:
-
black with Chesterfield sponsorship, "Max Biaggi" decals on the windshield and a specific stiker commemorating the World Championship 250 and 125 win on 1994 (Max Biaggi and Kazuto
Sakata)
-
gray/red/metallic
blue "Reggiani Replica", which no longer refers to a racing model of GP 250, but to the RSW-2 500 rode by Loris Reggiani and who curiously had in some cases, the front disc of
the previous version also for rotax 122 powered versions
On
the road when you will note a different behavior of the engine, slightly less powerful than the Rotax 123 in all the power band, but more "frindly".
Despite the pivot repositioned the behaviour is not so different: probably on the track only some rider can appreciate it.
However, it would be interesting to measure whether the displacement of the RS 122 is due to the different shape and positioning of the engine in the frame and if it have effect on the
chain-pulley-effect or not.
The bike was originally sold with:
-
cylinder
220L (code AP022361, available in racing version code AP8106365) with a special head (larger volume and wider band of squish)
-
kick-starter lever
-
left side fairing with a special shape for the kick-starter
-
specific oil tank
-
CDI unit (available an optional racing veriosion that allowed
aprilia to repromming it on the tracks)
-
coil
-
primary transmission
-
head studs (unlike the 122 standard screws)
-
specific single ring piston with
special pin (also available in a racing version)
-
carbon-fiber reeds
-
specific electrical system
-
specific RAVE unit
-
carburetor Dell'Orto VHSB 34 LD (PHBH 28 BD
supplied with the bike with its manifold and carburetor adapter)
-
expansion mivv SP and its
collector (in some cases was even provided with a black MIVV homologation codes stamped)
-
bulkhead
of the carburetor
-
bigger radiator
-
Marchesini wheels identical to those of the SP 1994
-
counterweights handlebar (smaller than those of the "road")
-
clutch
cover with oil seal and hole for the kick starter shaft, no longer coaxial with the gear shaft as in the Rotax 123 engine)
-
fully-adjustable shock absorber (black)
For
racing purpose it was available optional DLR silencer, a racing CDI double-plug programmable by aprilia on tracks, special cylinder head and 220L not fully reworked from aprilia racing
department.
Do not fork is no longer expected with hydraulic adjustment of compression.
The body has not
decals SPORT PRO or other differences with the standard model, but a special shape of the left panel due to the kick-starter.
For the standard MP bikes was available a Sport Prodution kit inlcuding Mivv exhaust chamber made in pressed steel (no longer the Giannelli one with welded cones), 28mm carburetor (PHBH 28 RD) as
per SP championship rules and its collector and airbox adapter, Marchesini wheels, shock absorber Sachs Boge fully-adjustable. The cylinder was sold, officially, only to riders with a racing license.
The
Sport Production "factory" is the maximum technical and performance evolution of a last, not strangled as versions 1993 and 1994 from the carburetor 28mm and definitely more sophisticated of the
standard model.
Special thanks
to Massimiliano Tesori, Andrea Carrozzo and Enrico Sillari for the valuable and proven information.
In 1996, the RS lost any "extrema" reference.
Compared to 1995, there are not a lot of changes. The decal of the pivot says only "Aprilia RS" and introduces a passenger handle tube that looks ugly. Due to this handle tube the tail is provided with two holes for the fixing.
The colour schemes of 1996 are the instant-classic Chesterfield (the lines of the number plates becomes green from the
from yellow ones of 1995) and a metallic gray version "Romboni Replica" was introduced. In 1996 it is available in both the full-power version and the limited power to 11 kW in
Italy.
In 1997 there
is only a black Replica colur scheme without Chesterfield logos and a silver metallic Replica with red rider's saddle. In 1997 we find the last Sport Pro factory-made.
With 1997 ending the dynasty born of the RS "full power" in Italy.
