The SP editions

In order to make it easier to find the information of the SP editionsin this section is a summarization of the special features. Further details and images are included in different areas of the site (series, technical and so on). All information, as the whole site, aree demonstrated by images and by official documentation by Rotax and/or Aprilia.
Below you find an official declaration of aprilia concerning the number of "LA" (345 including 1993 and 1994 bikes) and SP 1995 (200)
KEEP ATTENTION: as per the "road" bikes the SPs edition have the same look of the frame despite the mark LA: in 1993 gray paint with enbossed steering column, in 1994 polished with punching points.
On the left the sttering column 1992, on the right the 1994 one
On the left the sttering column 1992, on the right the 1994 one

The SP 1993

In 1993 is available the Sport Production version approved to race in this category. The graphics are very similar to the Replica of 1993 (black number plates, fender black, purple circles and "SPORTS PRO" sicker instead of the "Replica" ones of the standard version.

The frame is painted in matt gray and rough to the touch like a sandblasted finish, but with a number suffix "LA". Rider footpegs are finished in the same way. Although it is identical to a standard frame an SP is truly real if and only if the it has the right embossing "LA". It 'also important that ALL the other details typical of an SP are correct: without them the bike loses much of its value. The Sport Pro version keeps the electric starter, but there is also the kick-starter. The SP engine is has two coaxial axes: the inner is for the gear shift, the outer is for the kick-starter.

The Sport pro has several different components by the standard version:

  1. number plates and the bottom of the fairing with the stickers "SPORT PRO"
  2. fork by Marzocchi adjustable in rebound damping (six positions), bottome ends are different in the shape from the standard ones
  3. pads different from standard
  4. rear shock by BOGE with adjustable rebound, compression, preload and lenght with made in plastic support for the the nitrogen vessel
  5. the black side panel that covers the rear frame on the left side has a cut that allows you to mount the nitrogen vessel of the shock absorber
  6. airbox with the upper part with the code homologation LA-C-1014 embossed in the plastic material (shape and dimensions as the standard one)
  7. Marchesini wheels (not mounted on the bike of one of the photos of the press release) 2,75X17 and 3,75X17 with tires 100/80 ZR 17 front and 140/60 ZR 17 at the rear
  8. silencer in polished aluminum (identical to the standard version except for the embossed code LA-C-1014)
  9. exhaust (the same as the standard version except for code homologation LA-C-1014)
  10. RAVE ECU type 8400
  11. carbon-fiber reeds
  12. gears and kick starter lever
  13. one more steel disk into the clutch and its hub
  14. head (the rules of SP championships provided a limit of 13.5:1)
  15. single ring piston with special pin
  16. front brake fluid reservoir support in black
  17. 223610 cylinder with hand finishing
  18. Dell'Orto PHBH28RD carburetor with its special protection made in plastic
  19. smaller handlebar counterweights
  20. coaxial shaft for gear shift and kick-starter
  21. rear splash guards for the schock absorber
  22. addendum to the operation and maintenance manual with information about the adjustment of the suspension and the start lever assembly

The rod is IDENTICAL to the standard version as well as the gears that has the same ratios!!! Nowhere in official documents such as part list by Aprilia/Rotax about the Rotax SP 123 type show different parts in comparison to the standard engine "strada". This information can be disproved ONLY if someone opens a motor SP NEVER TOUCHED and demonstrates by MEASURES and WITH PICTURES the engines delivered by Rotax to Aprilia were different from those reported in the official list or that aprilia sully dissasembled and tuned-up all the part of the engine for customers.

The Sport Pro was delivered with a kit that MUST be present to say that the Sport Pro is complete. This information is reported by the magazines of the time, but some of the owners do not seem to have received them (probabily some dealer was not fully honest...):

  1. exhaust embossed "Giannelli aprilia racing" in welded steel
  2. kick-starter
  3. special sprocket (to shorten the final ratio)
  4. the tank for vapor/oil

The stock bike is also equipped with electric starter, but the gears for kick-starter system are located in the crank.

The Sport Production can then be further "refined" with the ignition with variable advance for the whole curve (not programmable) instead the sotck wich has a two-step curve. For a summary of the peculiarities of Sport Pro please visit the appropriate areas of the site.

In 1993 Aprilia won the title with the Extrema Sport Production 125 is in the category under 21 (Roberto Locatelli) and over 21 (Giacomo Guidotti).

The SP 1994

The Sport Pro frame "la" became polished and without ant paint or other coating and the siticker near the pivot it is new and the same of the standard versions.

The SP 1994 is a special version of the standard model with Chesterfield colour scheme and the same considerations about historical importance are appliable. It is the most rare extrema: it was originally produced in around 150 pieces, which added to the 250 of the 1993 lead the SP to be about 400.

The SP 1994 has the same special features of the SP 1993 with some news:

  1. the rims are painted in black and the the stickers "SPORTS PRO" replaces the "replica" one of the standard version)
  2. Marchesini wheels of the are enlarged (see the technical section)
  3. the aluminum silencer is covered in carbon fiber as the standard in 1994, but the plate is ebossed as LA-C-1014
  4. the gears of primary transmission and clutch housing are lightened
  5. cylinder, with identical fusion and code 223610 of Sport Pro 1993, has an additional port throught inlet and reed valve
  6. hydraulic calibration of the fork and shock absorber is optimized (different colors, the same of the standard bike, but with different shape)
  7. as for the standard version the crankcase are pressofused with a new technique to improve quality
  8. the gauges have black background as the foam support (gray until 1993)
  9. calipers are black as 1993 bikes instead of gold/caramel as standard 1994

In 1994 Aprilia won again the championship Sport Production 125, but only in over 21 with Marco Carnevale.

OEM special parts for SP editions

Aprilia also provided optional components for the SP, but that can also be used on the standard model:

  1. liquid waste and steam tray required for track use
  2. ignition system with variable timing (rotor, flywheel without gear for the electrical starter, coil, ECU)

The SP 1995

The bike was originally sold with:

  1.    cylinder 220L (code AP022361, available in racing version code AP8106365) with a special head (larger volume and wider band of squish)
  2.    kick-starter lever
  3.    left side fairing with a special shape for the kick-starter
  4.    specific oil tank
  5.    CDI unit (available an optional racing veriosion that allowed aprilia to repromming it on the tracks)
  6.    coil
  7.    primary transmission
  8.    head studs (unlike the 122 standard screws)
  9.    specific single ring piston with special pin (also available in a racing version)
  10.    carbon-fiber reeds
  11.    specific electrical system
  12.    specific RAVE unit
  13.    carburetor Dell'Orto VHSB 34 LD (PHBH 28 BD supplied with the bike with its manifold and carburetor adapter)
  14.    expansion mivv SP and its collector (in some cases was even provided with a black MIVV homologation codes stamped)
  15.    bulkhead of the carburetor
  16.    bigger radiator
  17.    Marchesini wheels identical to those of the SP 1994
  18.    counterweights handlebar (smaller than those of the "road")
  19.    clutch cover with oil seal and hole for the kick starter shaft, no longer coaxial with the gear shaft as in the Rotax 123 engine)
  20.    fully-adjustable shock absorber (black)

For racing purpose it was available optional DLR silencer, a racing CDI double-plug programmable by aprilia on tracks, special cylinder head and 220L not fully reworked from aprilia racing department.

Do not fork is no longer expected with hydraulic adjustment of compression.

The body has not decals SPORT PRO or other differences with the standard model, but a special shape of the left panel due to the kick-starter.

For the standard MP bikes was available a Sport Prodution kit inlcuding Mivv exhaust chamber made in pressed steel (no longer the Giannelli one with welded cones), 28mm carburetor (PHBH 28 RD) as per SP championship rules and its collector and airbox adapter, Marchesini wheels, shock absorber Sachs Boge fully-adjustable. The cylinder was sold, officially, only to riders with a racing license.

The Sport Production "factory" is the maximum technical and performance evolution of a last, not strangled as versions 1993 and 1994 from the carburetor 28mm and definitely more sophisticated of the standard model.

Special thanks to Massimiliano Tesori, Andrea Carrozzo and Enrico Sillari for the valuable and proven information.
