"GS" ed "LA": 1992-1994 (up to 1998 for export)

This section shows the features and the differences between the different model-year: in the other area of the site technical matters and further investigated, including any variants SP. The pictures serve as proof of the information provided and as integration of the text.

First off all a note regarding the differences between the first extrema equipped with Rotax 123 and the next with the Rotax 122:

  1. the pivot in the first series is positioned differently and the different feeling  of riding is appreciable only by few experienced riders; however, it would be interesting to measure if the displacement of the RS rotax-122-powered is due to the different shape and positioning of the engine (actually I have no proof of a different effect of the chain force)
  2. in practice on the road you notice a different behavior of the engine, which has more torque at middle rpm and appears to be slightly more powerful of the Rotax 122 that, on other side, has a bahaviour more "flat".

The extrema 1992 type "GS"

The frame, swingarm and rider footpegs supports are painted in metallic gray with semi-gloss transparent and it is marked GS. The wheels are painted in gloss black. For more details visit the sections of the restoration and of the frames (thechnical area of the site).

The first color available on the market was the black/purple/gray. Curiously the sticker showing tire pressure and tension of the chain placed on the chain guard is labeled AF1 and not RS or Extrema (see gallery).

From September 1992 it was available the Replica with colours inspired to aprilia 125 and 250 GP of the same year. The number plates have only the white outline and on the windhield there is a sticker reproducing the signature of Loris Reggiani. Inside the air intakes near the indicators there is a white sticker. The shock absorber and fork have no possibility of setting.

In '92 in the Sport Production championship was still used the AF1 and there is in the same year no special version "SP".

There is an important milestone in 1992: Alessandro Gramigni won the 125 GP world championship with the aprilia RS 125 R. The world champion
bike has the same graphic of 250 Reggiani and the RS (Extrema) Replica. Previously success was to win the 250 GP of San Marino Reggiani in 1987 that was sealed by the first-ever road 125 available with color Replica: the AF1 type AC / 1 of 1988. In 1992 Reggiani was second in the World Championship.

The extrema 1993 type "GS"

The standard version was sold with colors yellow/metallic blue/white, purple/metallic black/blue and Replica. The Replica in 1993 has purple rims, black number plates, black front fender and simplified stickers: no the technical sponsors at the bottom of the fairing and the brand "UNLIMITED Jeans" is replaced by the word "replica". Thiere is no longer the "signature" of Reggiani on the fairing, probably due to the importance of the first success of Gramigni in 1992 in the 125cc GP world championship. It can not be defined properly "Reggiani replica".

The 1993 version has a lot of new details:

  1. the frame and the rider footpegs are painted in matte gray and rough to the touch like a sandblasted finish (for more details, visit the sections related to the restoration and frames; the swing arm was painted by mounted as in 1992)
  2. sticker to the pivot
  3. sticker of tire pressure/chain tension (is now placed on the swingarm rather than the chain guard)
  4. a lot of bikes are without the plastic end-steering pads (they are present in the copies of pre-series appeared in magazines and on press kits, where, in some cases, there is also the old sitiker on the frame instead of the new one)
  5. RAVE slingshot made in chromed aluminum instead of steel (less burned oil dirt due to better thermal dissipation)
  6. nw set up of the fork confirmed in all tests of the magazines (the compression of the fork during the braking action is lower than in 1992)
  7. piston rings that allow to run more miles avoiding a short-term reduction of compression (there are very few engines today with the original pistons and rings)

In 1993 Reggiani ends the World Championship in third place.

The extrema sport pro 1993 type "LA"

In 1993 is available the Sport Production version approved to race in this category. The graphics are very similar to the Replica of 1993 (black number plates, fender black, purple circles and "SPORTS PRO" sicker instead of the "Replica" ones of the standard version.

The frame is painted in matt gray and rough to the touch like a sandblasted finish, but with a number suffix "LA". Rider footpegs are finished in the same way. Although it is identical to a standard frame an SP is truly real if and only if the it has the right embossing "LA". It 'also important that ALL the other details typical of an SP are correct: without them the bike loses much of its value. The Sport Pro version keeps the electric starter, but there is also the kick-starter. The SP engine is has two coaxial axes: the inner is for the gear shift, the outer is for the kick-starter.

The Sport pro has several different components by the standard version:

  1. number plates and the bottom of the fairing with the stickers "SPORT PRO"
  2. fork by Marzocchi adjustable in rebound damping (six positions), bottome ends are different in the shape from the standard ones
  3. pads different from standard
  4. rear shock by BOGE with adjustable rebound, compression, preload and lenght with made in plastic support for the the nitrogen vessel
  5. the black side panel that covers the rear frame on the left side has a cut that allows you to mount the nitrogen vessel of the shock absorber
  6. airbox with the upper part with the code homologation LA-C-1014 embossed in the plastic material (shape and dimensions as the standard one)
  7. Marchesini wheels (not mounted on the bike of one of the photos of the press release) 2,75X17 and 3,75X17 with tires 100/80 ZR 17 front and 140/60 ZR 17 at the rear
  8. silencer in polished aluminum (identical to the standard version except for the embossed code LA-C-1014)
  9. exhaust (the same as the standard version except for code homologation LA-C-1014)
  10. RAVE ECU type 8400
  11. carbon-fiber reeds
  12. gears and kick starter lever
  13. one more steel disk into the clutch and its hub
  14. head (the rules of SP championships provided a limit of 13.5:1)
  15. single ring piston with special pin
  16. front brake fluid reservoir support in black
  17. 223610 cylinder with hand finishing
  18. Dell'Orto PHBH28RD carburetor with its special protection made in plastic
  19. smaller handlebar counterweights
  20. coaxial shaft for gear shift and kick-starter
  21. rear splash guards for the schock absorber
  22. addendum to the operation and maintenance manual with information about the adjustment of the suspension and the start lever assembly

The rod is IDENTICAL to the standard version as well as the gears that has the same ratios!!! Nowhere in official documents such as part list by Aprilia/Rotax about the Rotax SP 123 type show different parts in comparison to the standard engine "strada". This information can be disproved ONLY if someone opens a motor SP NEVER TOUCHED and demonstrates by MEASURES and WITH PICTURES the engines delivered by Rotax to Aprilia were different from those reported in the official list or that aprilia sully dissasembled and tuned-up all the part of the engine for customers.

The Sport Pro was delivered with a kit that MUST be present to say that the Sport Pro is complete. This information is reported by the magazines of the time, but some of the owners do not seem to have received them (probabily some dealer was not fully honest...):

  1. exhaust embossed "Giannelli aprilia racing" in welded steel
  2. kick-starter
  3. special sprocket (to shorten the final ratio)
  4. the tank for vapor/oil

The stock bike is also equipped with electric starter, but the gears for kick-starter system are located in the crank.

The Sport Production can then be further "refined" with the ignition with variable advance for the whole curve (not programmable) instead the sotck wich has a two-step curve. For a summary of the peculiarities of Sport Pro please visit the appropriate areas of the site.

In 1993 Aprilia won the title with the Extrema Sport Production 125 is in the category under 21 (Roberto Locatelli) and over 21 (Giacomo Guidotti).

The extrema 1994 type "GS"

The deliveries of the MY 1994 started in May 1994. This is the first aprilia RS frame in polished aluminium without any coating or protective paint. The sticker near the pivot changes again. The crankcase is made with a new presofusion technique that improves the quality and it is marked "FT 93" near the sprocket. Starting from this year all the RS will have a polished frame. There are two different colou schemes: in the pricelistt are named RS125R (the "red fairing" with big extrema stickers on the sides) and the RS125 Replica. There are the new features:

  1. the head has higher compression (keeping the previous fusion, and therefore the code printed, it is worked to be lower: see the technical area)
  2. the fork has a ne setting (could be the only difference is the 10 mm lowering in the positioning in the steering plates, but it is possible that there are improvements for the spring and a different hydraulic fluid)
  3. the tachometer and thermometer gauges have black background and the foam from gray change into black (some export bikes keep old whtite ones)
  4. the brake calipers are gold/caramel painted, except for some bikes destined for foreign markets (still black)
  5. fork changes in colours (black bottom ends and the tubes becomes slightly darker than the previous ghrey (the part-list indicates anodizing gray for the Replica and blue for the R)
  6. the fixing screws of the front caliper to the bottom end change from Allen to hexagonal screws
  7. top caps of the fork become hexagonal instead of Allen screw
  8. the crankcase are cast with a new technique to improve quality (not a change only for the SP, but for all Rotax 123 including off-road RX as explained in a magazine dated 1994)
  9. the VIN has a new, more modern marking "pointed"
  10. no plastic peg nearing the steering column
  11. the shock absorber has a new setting and earn the preload adjustment
  12. the silencer still remain made in aluminum, but there is a thin tube made in carbon-fiber (only aesthetic function) and it is equipped with a metallic black label marked GS
  13. the vents under the windshield are carbon look and interlally on the fairing it is foreseen a carbon look sticker
  14. an "aprilia" sticker is appliend on windscreen to cover the back of the dashboard

MY 1994 with Chesterfiled colour scheme and polished frame is the first Aprilia RS 125/250 series to show off this beloved and celebrated graphic and among the first to use a modern sports look "replica" almost totally black, over time become synonymous of sportiness and not only elegance. My 1994 represents the maximum development of aprilia with Rotax 123 engine.

In 1994 we witness the triumph of aprilia as winner of the GP world championship 125 and 250 rode by Kazuto Sakata and Massimiliano Biaggi, who will repeat the success for two consecutive years and will be world champion SBK on Aprilia RSV 1000
in 2010 and 2012 .

aprilia GP 500 (Reggiani), aprilia GP 250 1994 (Biaggi world champion), aprilia GP 125 1994 (Sakata world champion)
aprilia GP 500 (Reggiani), aprilia GP 250 1994 (Biaggi world champion), aprilia GP 125 1994 (Sakata world champion)

The combination aprilia/Biaggi born in 1994 is now a part of the history of motorbike competitions. The unusual black colour scheme for the bike used in the 250 championship make Biaggi nicknamed "Black Knight". Chesterfield version of 1994 does however no reference to Biaggi and is right because in that same year and in 1993 with the same black fairings raced other big riders: Jean-Philippe Ruggia, the first driver to bend the elbow to the ground, the "historic" Loris Reggiani and the great motocross champion, less fortunate on track, Jean-Michel Bayle.

Just this "lucky combination" will most likely give the right emphasis to the 1994 versions, moreover the Cheterfield one.

Due to the drastic reduction of the market began in 1993 because of the economic situation and the commercial supremacy of Cagiva Mito (due to the look, but also to Lawson in GP 500 word championship), this bike is quite rare to find, as well as Replica 1993. Note that the Biaggi's 250 Biaggi had the sponsor Mobil1 just like the 125 Replica of 1994. The following year the sponsor become IP also on Rotax 122 powered aprilia RS.

The extrema sport pro 1994 type "LA"

The Sport Pro frame "la" became polished and without ant paint or other coating and the siticker near the pivot it is new and the same of the standard versions.

The SP 1994 is a special version of the standard model with Chesterfield colour scheme and the same considerations about historical importance are appliable. It is the most rare extrema: it was originally produced in around 150 pieces, which added to the 250 of the 1993 lead the SP to be about 400.

The SP 1994 has the same special features of the SP 1993 with some news:

  1. the rims are painted in black and the the stickers "SPORTS PRO" replaces the "replica" one of the standard version)
  2. Marchesini wheels of the are enlarged (see the technical section)
  3. the aluminum silencer is covered in carbon fiber as the standard in 1994, but the plate is ebossed as LA-C-1014
  4. the gears of primary transmission and clutch housing are lightened
  5. cylinder, with identical fusion and code 223610 of Sport Pro 1993, has an additional port throught inlet and reed valve
  6. hydraulic calibration of the fork and shock absorber is optimized (different colors, the same of the standard bike, but with different shape)
  7. as for the standard version the crankcase are pressofused with a new technique to improve quality
  8. the gauges have black background as the foam support (gray until 1993)
  9. calipers are black as 1993 bikes instead of gold/caramel as standard 1994

In 1994 Aprilia won again the championship Sport Production 125, but only in over 21 with Marco Carnevale.

The RS type "GS" up to 1998

Until 1998 some "export" bikes was sold with the new design intruduced in 1995, but the frame "GS", the engine Rotax 123 and the front brake with golden flange still remained the same. The dashboard appears identical to that of the RS 125 with rotax 122, but the tachometer although aesthetically identical and with oil mixer warning light is mechanical. Obviously, because of the instrumentation partially digital including thermometer and chronometer, the electrical system is different from previous versions with Rotax 123 and also those with Rotax 122.
